A Night in the Moroccan Desert: Merzouga or Agafay?

The great dunes of Erg Chebbi or a stony desert just outside Marrakech: compare Merzouga and Agafay based on your time and what you want to see.

A Night in the Moroccan Desert: Merzouga or Agafay?

Sleeping in the desert is one of Morocco's most sought-after experiences. Two destinations come up again and again, but they offer very different trips.

Merzouga: the great dunes

If you dream of sand dunes, Merzouga is the right stop. It is the gateway to Erg Chebbi, whose dunes rise above 150 metres. The journey from Marrakech takes a long day on the road, so allow at least two to three days.

Agafay: the easy escape

The Agafay Desert is a stony plateau without tall dunes, less than an hour from Marrakech. It is ideal for a short break, with a night in a camp and a beautiful sunset facing the Atlas.

How to choose

  • You only have one night: choose Agafay.
  • You want real dunes: choose Merzouga.
  • You are travelling with family and short on time: Agafay keeps road hours down.

When to go

Autumn, winter and spring are the most pleasant times. Winter nights can be cold, so bring a warm jacket.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit Merzouga in a day from Marrakech?
It is not recommended, as the drive takes a long day. Allow at least two to three days.
Are there dunes in the Agafay Desert?
Agafay is a stony desert, so it has no tall sand dunes like those at Merzouga.
